Phone or Text: 773-614-0536

My name is Jane Chen. I am a bicultural and bilingual psychotherapist, providing individual psychotherapy to adult clients in Chicago. My approach to psychotherapy is psychoanalytically oriented, relational and collaborative. I specialize in psychodynamic, insight driven treatment for emotional difficulties or prolonged dissatisfaction in life, including chronic depression, treatment-resistant anxiety, repeated relationship difficulty, childhood trauma, prolonged grief, narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), OCD, feeling of isolation, fear of aging, hypochondria and, emotional difficulties experienced by adult children of first generation immigrants. The frequency of treatment is determined on an individual basis, typically once a week and sometimes twice a week.

Why Psychotherapy?

At some point in our lives, we all experience the full force of life’s challenges. Sometimes distress, pain, alienation or isolation is too intense for us to traverse our path alone. Yet, for many of us, asking for help or inviting others into our private world is equally difficult. Psychodynamic psychotherapy can help us understand conflicts underlying these challenges. Through insight, enhanced emotional regulation and self-empowerment, we can become more adaptive and begin to heal and grow in the face of challenges or transitions in life. It can also help to cultivate a greater sense of meaning and purpose.

Telehealth and In-person Appointments

I provide both tele-psychotherapy and in person sessions. For telehealth, it is through a confidential and HIPAA compliant video platform. My office is located in downtown Chicago at 30 N Michigan Ave, Suite 1203, Chicago, IL 60602.

I am in network with Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), UnitedHealthcare (UHC) PPO and AETNA. For fees, insurance coverage and other information, please consult my Psychology Today profile.

To verify if I am in network with a specific plan, please refer to Blue Cross Blue Shield’s Provider Finder Page, or a provider finder page for UHC or AETNA.

About Me

Jane Chen, PhD LCPC

I am a psychodynamic therapist with an earlier academic training in cognitive psychology. I have been living in Chicago for about 30 years and I am a mother of Chinese-American children, and stepmother of American children. Growing up in Shanghai, China, my early experience included Confucianism, deprivation, political oppression and, profound loss. After teaching English at a college in China for a few years, I immigrated to Canada where I received my Ph.D. from McGill in 1995. My doctoral research concerned cognitive processes underlying comprehension of natural text. After graduation, I worked as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Chicago, conducting research on the subjective experience of happiness. I left the academic field, working as a computer programmer while bringing up my children. In 2015, I returned to my original passion – Counseling Psychology.

My first name Qin is pronounced in the second tone. One of its Chinese meanings is a small amount of pure affection. For non-native speakers of Chinese, Qin is difficult name to pronounce. I also go by Jane. My legal/registered name is still Qin Chen.
